Traditions of the Prophet II

For Traditions of the Prophet, a two-volume series, Dr. Nurbakhsh has gathered from the garden of prophetic traditions those sayings that are of particular importance for Sufis. Included along with the original Persian and Arabic text are excerpts from the great sufi poets concerning these traditions.

Excerpt from Traditions of the Prophet II

28: "He who knows himself, knows his Lord"

When Abu Sa'id Abe'l-Khair was asked about this tradition, he replied, "He who knows himself as nothingness, knows his Lord as Being."

Rumi's couplet below refers to this tradition:

To express this, the Prophet stated
He who knows himself knows his Lord.
