Drunkenness

(masti | مستی)

‍

Drunkenness is a state of love that overwhelms the lover, until the lover forgets themselves completely.

The remembrance of the Beloved draws the lover into this state. Love fills every part of the lover’s being. Every thought and every act is steeped in love.

Bewildered, the lover can no longer tell good from evil, or right from wrong. At last, even self-awareness falls away. The lover is no longer aware of their own bewilderment or intoxication. Only love remains—all-encompassing, all-pervading.

As Hafez says:

Do not discuss the secrets of drunkenness with puritans veiled in piety
Do not ask a picture on the wall for the soul’s mysteries
به مستوران مگو اسرار مستی
حدیث جان مپرس از نقش دیوار
