The Nimatullahi Suti Order took root in Vancouver, in the early 1990s, when members began meeting in homes. In 1998 a formal center, called Khaniqah, was established by the late Master, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, located in West Vancouver. In 2011 it relocated to the more central and vibrant South Vancouver.
The current Master, Dr. Alireza Nurbakhsh last visited Vancouver in May of 2024, when a Khanigah renovation project was initiated and has since been completed by the members.
The meditation sessions of Vancouver Sufi House are held on Thursdays at 6:30 pm and Sundays at 6:00 pm. The doors open an hour before meetings, providing an opportunity to meditate, peruse the Sufi library, or help with services such as gardening at the Khanigah. Meditation sessions begin with the inspirational discourses from the Masters of the Path, followed by group meditation to heartful Sufi music and poetry.
On occasion, live music is performed. Attendees can socialize, drink tea, and enjoy sweets after the sessions are over.
Service to the community is a vital Sufi practice and our initiatives include clothing collections for youth and adults through Covenant House and Blankets BC. Members also volunteer at Vancouver Food Runners, who support agencies that prepare and distribute meals for those in need.
