The word 'khaniqah' refers to the gathering place of the Sufis. The word 'Nimatullahi' is derived from the name of Shah Nimatullah Wali, who founded the order at the end of the 14th century A.D.
The present master of the Nimatullahi Sufi Order is Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh.
